Lifelong Learning Skills

Habits of Mind Through Music Education

Habits of mind are ways of thinking, attitudes and approaches to work. These ways contribute to lifelong learning so students have the tools to become imaginative, organized, creative, and socially responsible people who have the ability to make connections in the world around them.

1.  Imaginative Thinking

As they create and perform, students draw upon imagination, perception, and memories. They learn to take risks and devise multiple interpretations.

2.  Heightened Perceptual Awareness

Students learn to pay attention to what they see and hear.

3.  Reflective Thinking

Students learn to accept and give constructive critisism through discussions and self assessment, and to regard critique as an integral part of refining communication.

4.  Organization, Curiosity and Persistence

Students learn to play and pursue a sequence of steps in rehearsing, creating, and performing. They learn to persevere when they hit obstacles.

5.  Analytical Thinking and the Ability to Make Connections

Students learn to analyze musical compositions, research historical and cultural contexts, draw conclusions, and make informed judgements.

6.  Personal and Social Responsibility

Public performance teaches accountability for your work, and that overall success is dependent on group cohesiveness.

7.  Respect for Creativity in Others

Because students invest so much of themselves, they appreciate why other people devote themselves to work and projects. This gives structure to the human experience.
