Acquiring an Instrument

Renting:

Instruments may be rented from established music stores for an initial  few months for a fraction of the cost to purchase.  This ‘trial period’ is a great way to see if your child will commit to daily practice and enjoy the success that comes from the effort. Loss, damage, and repair insurance is available for a few dollars and a dealer representative makes weekly trips to the schools.

Borrowing:

Relatives and friends may have an instrument to lend.  Hopefully it is in fine playable condition and is one that works with the child’s physical characteristics.  The instrumental teacher can evalute the playability of the instrument and suggest getting repair estimates if necessary.

Purchasing:

Purchasing an instrument initially either at a music store, from a newspaper ad, or the internet can save you money, however it can also be risky if you do not know what you are getting. Your child may loose interest early on, and you may find that you want to sell the instrument yourself. You will also have to deal with repair costs out of pocket.

School Owned Loaners:

Used instruments in good working condition loaned to deserving students for an initial trial period.  There is a very limited number and selection of instruments this year.  The goal is to help as many in need as possible.  Parents are responsible for loss and damage repair costs.

Parent rental afternoon:

In October there will be an after school (3:00 – 5:00 p.m.) meeting at Brayton Elementary when parents will meet with music sales representatives to rent an instrument and to purchase a book and accessories. Date to be determined
