Sounds Good……..…..a Community Service Learning Project
In September 2000, Roger LaRocca, a Drury High School band student initiated “Sounds Good” with the idea of high school, college, and middle school students volunteering their time and talents to tutor 4th and 5th grade instrumentalists after school. This mentoring program has flourished during the last seven years involving hundreds of musicians, and is now coordinated by Michael LaRocca, his younger brother.
The program consists of weekly small group lessons on flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and drum pad. These lessons provide additional reinforcement that the students receive during the school day weekly lessons. Sounds Good participation is voluntary and usually meets from October to December on Monday afternoons 3:10-4:00 at Brayton School.
The older musicians are great role models and an enjoyable learning experience for all participants has been evident.
